Readers may know of my love of China - having spent just 3 semesters there in 2008 and 2010. I have been to Tiananmen Square - not far from the awesome Forbidden City in Beijing. My friend and I stood in the huge square and remembered what had happened there in 1989, on June 4th.
Many Chinese even now know nothing about it, and those who have heard about it find it hard to believe. You cannot access any material about the massacre on Chinese internet. There is no reference to it in Chinese history books.
I still watch these videos in awe with tears streaming. There are other videos on Youtube. These two will tell you the story of what happened there, and how a government turned on its young people to show is might.
Yes I remember this too. A turning point in history really. It is true most Chinese don't know about it, but the world does, and the Chinese people are slowly becoming more aware of what's happening.

I wanted to write about a movie I saw a couple of days ago. I think it was called 'Wild thing'. Had Matt Damon I think, it was on TV and rather late at night, starting about 10.30pm. I realised part way through that it had some rather sexy scenes that were not my kind of thing, but I had got so involved with the plot I had to see it to the end.
ReplyDeleteWe are studying script writing at the moment as part of our MA in Writing, and I am now looking at movies in a completely different light, starting to analyse them much more, especially the way the scripts are written. The thing that really got me involved was the plot. It was very cleverly written, with twists and turns going all over the place. According to 'Save the Cat', a really good book on script writing, there was the death around page 75. The set up was excellent, and then the story went awol. The cleverest part was that the story finished, with the bad guy being eliminated, and an unexpected character ending up with all the money. Then they ran the credits....THEN they had three more scenes which actually showed what happened and who really got the money, a much more unexpected character....talk about a twist in the tail!
If you want a good plot, you might like to check out the movie.

Oh, well, and while I am here, I'll put in my twopence worth about Downton Abbey showing on
ReplyDeleteSunday night tv. This is another script with undercurrents rippling in all directions, intrigue and who knows what to come. Looks like it will be a great series.
